State CET Counselling Explained: CAP, Option Entry & Seat Allotment
After the state CET result, admission to colleges happens through a counselling or seat-allotment process. Each state has its own name and process for this — Maharashtra calls it CAP (Centralised Admission Process), Karnataka runs option entry through KEA, Gujarat uses ACPC, Kerala CEE runs centralised allotment, and the two EAPCETs use web options. The underlying logic is the same: you register, rank your preferred colleges and branches, and the system allots you a seat based on your rank and available seats.
Counselling is the most time-sensitive phase of the entire CET cycle. Missing a registration deadline, failing to confirm a seat, or not reporting to the allotted college within the specified window can mean losing your seat even after a good rank.

Counselling portals for TG EAPCET and AP EAPCET are announced separately from the main exam portal each cycle. Always confirm on that state's official CET portal.
How a typical CET counselling round works
- Register for counselling — After the result, a separate registration window opens for counselling. Pay any required counselling registration fee and complete your profile.
- Enter your preferences (option entry) — Log in to the counselling portal and enter your choices — colleges and branches — in your preferred order. Put your best choice first. The system will try to allot you the highest preference for which you qualify by rank.
- Track mock or trial allotment — Some states release a mock or provisional allotment before the final round, giving you a chance to revise your choices. Use this to check where your rank realistically falls.
- Receive final allotment — The final allotment is published online. Download your allotment letter immediately.
- Report to the allotted college — Carry all required documents and the allotment letter to the college within the reporting window. Failure to report in time may mean forfeiting your seat.
Counselling deadlines are strict: Seat allotment deadlines across state CETs are firm. Missing a reporting date or failing to pay the seat-confirmation fee typically results in losing the allotted seat, even after a strong rank.
